Hey phlip, well just tell me what kind of music you're looking for, I won't know everything, especially as I'm in London at the mo'.

Oh, didn't know you were in London. I actually listen to XFM over the internet all day at work. You wouldn't believe how bad radio is here in the states.

poor you, phlip, I can tell from your blog you seem to be one of apparently few Americans not excessively patriotic about the U.S.! what's so bad about the radio? Just brainless pop music (my guess) to listen to? Nice workplace where you can listen to the radio, anyway.

I think you're confusing patriotic with jingoistic. I'm very patriotic, but I'm not jingoistic which means I don't wrap myself in the US flag blindly. As Mark Twain said, "Loyalty to the country always, loyalty to the government when it deserves it." Our current president, and the current republican backed government that follows him, is a shit stain on the history of our nation. The difference between the republicans and us Democrats is the way we see America. They see a bunch of dirt with dollars bills strewn around to exploit surrounded by some imaginary lines. We see a sea of faces, which deserves our attention, every last one of them. BTW, speaking of Twain, have you ever been to Lucerne, Switzerland to see the fountain he called the most beautiful thing in Europe? It commemorates the lost Swiss guards that were killed protecting Marie Antoinette.

jingoistic, wow I learned a new word now, thanks for that! I'll be using that on someone soon, I'm thinking of taking the piss out of some English people here in London.. it's rather easy to wind them up. Well I'm glad you can contribute at least a bit to rearranging the notoriously bad impression we Europeans have got of the Americans, it must be quite annoying for you. I imagine the first thing people ask you as soon as you reveal you're American is, what d'you think of Bush? Have you worked out a clever standard answer to that by now to shut people up? Anyway, I never worried you'd wrap yourself up in an American flag, you only ever get wrapped in it when you're dead, don't you..
Surprisingly enough (surprisingly because of my prejudice towards the American geography skills) you seem to know there are countries existing beside the States, even better than I do because I've never been to any neighbour countries of Germany except for France and the Netherlands but on my planned world trip (which will take me a life time, hopefully) I shall certainly drop by the nice fountain in Switzerland, then. Although I'm very careful about people saying: this is the most beautiful whatever thing, because they haven't actually EVERYthing, have they..? If it moved Mark Twain enough to make such a comment I believe it must be worth seeing.

Hi Aylin, I suppose you remember me, this is Meral from Izmir;
I’ve been watching your site since Kemal informed me . I’m proud that I’ve a relative like you. We were very worried about the attacks in London when you where there, but we decided once more that you are very brave and do not pay attention to such nonsense terror parade. Good luck in London, we’ll be in touch. Benal, Adnan and the kids are moving to Lousanne for two years at least and we said goodbye to them today for they’re leaving tomorow, this was a sad weekend for me as you can see. We wish to see you soon, byeeeee.

Hi Meral! If you're indeed following my site as closely as you said then I hope you'll read this. How are you, what are you doing, working? Wow, I was sooo happy to read some news from you, after all we never communicate as long as I'm not in Turkey to visit you. You should have written earlier, I was so surprised and it's good to know some people are actually reading what I write..!
That must be really sad for you, I've heard about Benal and her family moving and I wish them all the best. If you talk to them , give my love to them, hopefully they will return soon.
Actually, it's so strange how everyone I meet calls me brave for staying in London, while I don't think I'm being brave at all, it's just an ordinary thing to do, in my opinion. I'm just living my life like everyone else, try to experience as much as possible by travelling and staying in different places but there are so many people who are so much more brave than I am and who do such an amount of amazing things to help others, without even being appreciated for their work.
Anyway, keep in touch, Meral!

Try travelling and living in the 3rd world, that'll teach you a few experiences you'll never forget. The romantic notion that you europeans have of experiencing *all* the things life is as complete as the average american's knowledge of geography. It is actually revolting to see how exploitative your 'democratic' governments are of the rest of the world, and how unaware you, as individuals are of their policies and practices.

Apologies for the rant, you did'nt deserve it. But they needed expression and I managed to vomit them here...

hello anonymous person!
thanks for expressing your thoughts, that was the idea of my blog in the first place and now I got over the first little shock I can even reply to you..
I agree: I have no idea what kind of an experience it would be to live in the so called 3rd world because usually the media avoids to slam the truth into European faces and unless you dig deep to find out about it I agree most people stay ignorant for their whole life and just don't care even if they're shown pictures and stuff. And yes, I agree, the 3rd world is being exploited and I can't do much to change it. It has to stop and I am planning to do as much as I possibly can to go out and do something about it and help, even if the only thing I'll ever manage will be to create awareness of the situation in many countries.
It's interesting how you posted that comment on MY blog because due to many years of obesrving people in my environment I can say I've always been more aware and cared more about the 3rd world than others around me. I just consider it natural to think about others, while most people seem to care more about satisfying themselves as the top one priority.
Still, by the way, for my little self it's still an experience to be in London, even at home there are difficulties you have to cope with, no matter how small they might seem to the rest of the world.
